With global competition for skilled workers intensifying, the country is focusing on attracting and retaining highly skilled immigrants through its International Talent Attraction Strategy.

The Honourable Lena Metlege Diab, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced the 2026 categories under the Express Entry system, enabling Canada to invite candidates who can fill critical labour gaps in key sectors.

New Categories to Address Labour Shortages

Among the updates is a new category for foreign medical doctors with Canadian work experience. Additionally, Canada will introduce categories for:

1 Researchers and senior managers with Canadian work experience

2 Transport professionals, including pilots, aircraft mechanics, and inspectors

3 Highly skilled foreign military applicants recruited by the Canadian Armed Forces, such as military doctors, nurses, and pilots

Existing categories from 2025 will continue, prioritizing candidates with strong French language skills and those in sectors like:

Health care and social services, including nurse practitioners, dentists, pharmacists, psychologists, and chiropractors

Trades, such as carpenters, plumbers, and machinists

By refining Express Entry to focus on the skills our communities truly need, we are strengthening our labour market, supporting provincial priorities, and ensuring newcomers can contribute from day one.” said Minister Lena Metlege Diab.

1 Immigration accounts for nearly 100% of Canada’s labour force growth, helping to address shortages in critical sectors.

2 Express Entry is Canada’s main system for permanent residency applications through the Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Skilled Trades Program, Canadian Experience Class, and part of the Provincial Nominee Program.

3 The first round for foreign medical doctors with Canadian work experience will occur in the coming days. Draws for the Canadian Experience Class and French-proficiency candidates will continue through early 2026.

4 Canada is focused on attracting top talent to strengthen economic resilience, targeting medical doctors, graduate students, researchers, and strategic roles in national defence.
